Responsible for day-to-day operation of the SEMA Garage automotive emissions lab in Detroit for the purpose of completing chassis dyno certification testing for SEMA members, including iterative testing for product design purposes and those required for SEMA COCs or CARB Executive Orders. Must have familiarity with all forms of standardized testing, including FTP, HWFET, US06, LA92 and SC03 cycles. Lab Manager will be responsible for specification and procurement of consumable gases, scheduling maintenance of AVL equipment (as needed) and general oversight of daily operations including scheduling lab time for clients. Advanced familiarity with onboard vehicle emissions systems is required. Equipment specifications for the SEMA Garage lab include AVL CVS i60 LD, AMA i60 with Modal analysis, iGEM V, AVL/Zöllner 4WD Dyno, PM Smart Sampler, AVL Filter Weigh Station and AVL Canister Loading station.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY
- The Lab Manager will be responsible for direct contact with vendors to specify specialty supplies (consumable gases, most notably) and ensure that sufficient quantities are maintained.
- Responsible for technical communication with AVL and other vendors for equipment related concerns and to schedule regular maintenance.
- The Lab Manager will ensure that regular calibration routines are performed according to CARB/1066 requirements.
- The Emissions Lab Manager will coordinate with the Process Specialist to interface with SEMA members to review test requirements, schedule lab time and review and analyze test data.
- Responsible for monthly Emissions Lab billing.
- Responsible for oversight of Detroit Emissions Lab staff.
- Responsible for maintenance of building and equipment related to emissions testing.
PRIMARY SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity and experience with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Section 40 Part 86
- Extensive and thorough experience in running and maintaining a certification level automotive emissions lab
- Sufficient experience to review modal data and evaluate the probability that a given part or system will be acceptable to CARB. Must be skilled in communicating test results to SEMA Members.
- Familiarity with OBD2 systems
- Valid Driver’s license
- Dedicated to the importance of maintaining complete transparency with SEMA staff, insofar as possible bias toward the Association or its member companies could be perceived.
- Knowledgeable about the Specialty Automotive Aftermarket parts industry and familiar with the range of parts and systems that typify this market segment
- Excellent communication and administrative skills
